The Choice

It’s been a decision a month (well, years, really) in the making, but finally it has been made!
I have chosen not to complete my dissertation.
Even so, there is real work to be done on the project before I hand it to others. Specifically, the remainder of the cataloguing of more than 45,000 bee specimens from my five field seasons in the desert.
Many folks are optimistic that when I finish that massive undertaking, I will decide to make a Master’s degree of it. I am not chief among those folks, but I do join in their ranks.
There is much more to write about this place where I stand, at the intersection of career, community, family, and self. But for now, those posts are on the back burner.
For now, my time is for my family and community.
And, one hour a day, for bees.
Oh, how right and surprisingly good this feels!

Excellent capture of the baby !
Thank you! He’s an easy subject, I must admit. =)
It takes courage to change one’s mind or path in life, but the change always opens new doors, and brings wonderful experiences that would not have occurred if you had stayed on the “prescribed course”.
Yes. As E.M. Forster says, “We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned,
so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” Love you!
Congrats Laurie! I know this struggle all too well. Enjoy your family!
Thank you, Krystal! It was not an easy decision. It never is, for any mother who faces it, for sure. But for me, it was the right one. I’ve been rather amazed by how good it feels to tell people, “I’m not finishing.” My heart is light. I’ve been so happy!
On side note, it’s so nice to know that you visit over here… You are good company. =) Matt, Bennett, and I have been enjoying the FB photos of E — he is just darling! Hugs to all three of you!
Hi, Laurie. I still check in here every now and then and have been wondering about your decision. Your success and happiness come from the way in which you approach life, not from what you do. With your zest and optimism, you couldn’t have made a wrong decision! (Love your Bennett pictures!)
Thank you, Elizabeth, for your kind words. I am touched! I’m so glad you check in here, and that you’ve enjoyed the Bennett photos. Hopefully we will all see each other in person soon, where B will do his best to charm you face-to-face, too — he does love the ladies. =) All my best to you and Rick!
